2 Things That Are Killing Your Website’s Conversion Rate

Today my business partner and I had a sit down to discuss some of the things that we have found that make a big difference when it comes to your online marketing and website’s overall success.

We wanted to work out some of those simple little tweaks and changes that you can make that are going to give you a big boost… we came up with 2 surprisingly simple steps.

Marketing Tip 1#: Load Times

Tyler (Our Lead Marketer) said that you want to make sure the load time to access your website is about 3 seconds. This might sound like a difficult task for some but even moving towards that goal is a big help.

Example: Tyler said he is currently running a campaign for a client and by simply stopping a moving carousel of images in their landing page he was able to get 2 point increase (out of 10) in his Google Adwords rating. Which makes a huge long term difference.

There has been a lot of research showing that the patience of a new visitor is about 3 seconds when it comes to loading up a website for the first time. This might seem short but it isn’t that surprising considering we are living in the age of 2-minute noodles, netflix and tinder. We seem to want it and we seem to want it now.

Now there are a lot of variations and factors that can be considered that affect this “3 Second Rule” such as if your website is partly loaded then there is evidence to suggest you make get a little bit of extra time with your new visitor, but even then it isn’t the best look for your website or for your brand!

Remember: First Impressions Are IMPORTANT.

So while the content on your website is really important, if people aren’t sticking around to read it, what’s the point?

In a nutshell: make sure you start moving your website towards that 3 second load time.

Actions You Can Take:

  1. Take a look at your website now and time how long it takes to load.
  2. If it is taking a long time to load, chances are it’s the images on your website, either number of or, more likely, size of said images. So make sure that they are properly sized and optimized for web use, in general no image should be bigger than about 200kb… unless of course you’re a photographer displaying your artwork.
  3. Use an image optimization tool to reduce your image sizes then reupload them and enjoy the increased traffic and conversions.

Marketing Tip 2#: Simplicity

For myself (Lead Website Designer here at Apex Designs) a big thing that I have noticed that affects our clients website conversion rate is how clean and “simple” the design is.

People are busy, and they don’t want to sort through your clutter to find the things they want.

If your website is too cramped and it’s not clear where they have to go to find the information that they are after, your visitors will get burnt out with what is called “Decision Fatigue” and simply click the back button to avoid the mental strain.

You can avoid this by having a simple, easy to use navigation structure and by sticking to one or two main call to action buttons per page.

The other plus side to simplicity is that it will give your website an aura of prestige and professionalism. Think about one of the great masters of simplicity, Apple.

A brand name synonymous with elegance, quality and ease of use. This is a good target to aim for with your own website.

Actions You Can Take:

  1. Take a look at your website, or better yet invite a friend, and jot down all the things that stand out to you that look too cluttered or are simply unnecessary.
  2. Eliminate Ruthlessly. Ask yourself if it really needs to be there or if there was a simpler way to achieve the same result.

So to sum it all up. Be Fast | Be Simple | Be Successful!
